New Chair for Cartwheel (voluntary position)
Our chair, Mike Faulkner, is stepping down after six years at the helm and we are seeking a talented, experienced and motivated candidate for the post. You will be joining a team which currently consists of 8 Trustees, all experts in their respective fields, 3 very busy members of staff (about to become 4 with the imminent appointment of a new administrator) and a large roster of freelance artists and volunteers delivering projects in a wide range of community settings.
The ideal candidate will have:
- experience of management, probably in a small enterprise environment or in the statutory or third sector;
- enthusiasm for the role the arts can play in a social context, for example regeneration and community cohesion
- awareness of the changing landscape of public funding and the commissioning of services

| Mike Faulkner – Chair |
| |
Mike has been Chair of Cartwheel Arts since 2003 and has been involved with the company as a Trustee since 2001.
A management consultant by profession – specialising in Third Sector management support, he has 22 years experience as a senior manager in the cultural industries. Between 1984 and 1996 he developed a dual career in cultural marketing and management training throughout the UK. In 1996 he joined the Arts Council (North West Arts Board) for four years, where he specialised in audience development, organisational evaluation and policy negotiation with the then emerging NWDA. In late 2000 he became Deputy Director at GMCVO and in2003 Team Leader with Manchester City Council’s Cultural Strategy Team. In 2004 with another consultant he set up G & M Associates Ltd (www.gandmassociates.co.uk).
In addition to his professional consultancy work Mike is also a volunteer Mentor on behalf of Business in the Arts:North West and Full Circle Arts. |

| Dr John Collins – Vice-chair |
| |
| John is Area Manager for the Environment Agency (North West Region), having previously worked for the Environment Agency in the Thames Region, Lower Trent and the Midlands. He has a Ph.D in Materials Science and specialises in pollution management. |

| Stephen Hobson – Treasurer |
| |
| Stephen is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and has a wide interest in the arts. |

| Gillian Hush MBE |
| |
| Gillian Hush, the vice chairman, is a former BBC Radio 4 features producer. She lives in South Manchester and is also on the board of Manchester University Press and the national council of the Arvon Foundation. |

| Sohail Ahmad |
| |
| Sohail is Director of Deeplish Community Centre in Rochdale, Chair of Rochdale Community Transport and Chair of Milkstone and Deeplish Area Forum. Sohail is also a published poet. |

| Richard Todd |
| |
Ex-pat Scotsman – married to lovely Gaynor – three grown up offspring, nearly all married, recently became a member of the “I’m not nearly old enough to be a grandad!” club.
I had to medically retire ten years ago now, and have rekindled my love of art. As a very mature student gained a degree in visual arts 3 years ago, and now pursue my art helping with special needs children; who have taught me far more than I could ever teach them. Presently producing a mural in mosaic for the “excellence in cities” scheme.
Very grateful to be asked to join the board of Cartwheel in 2004 and am looking forward to a long association with them.

| Phil Barton |
| |
Phil is Chief Executive of Encams, which is best known for its campaigning brands Keep Britain Tidy and Blue Flag Beaches. He is now regularly on television, often locking horns with Bill Bryson. He was founder director of RENEW Northwest. Established by NWDA and GONW, RENEW Northwest supports regeneration leaders and practitioners from all sectors throughout the region in driving up the skills and capacity of all those involved in building sustainable communities.
From 1997-2002 Phil was director at Groundwork UK, initially as North West Regional Director and latterly as national Director of Corporate Strategy.

| Alyson Malach |
| |
Alyson, our newest recruit to the Board, has come to us through the Business in the Arts Board Bank. She is a Management and Education/Equality consultant and was formerly Head of Lifelong Learning at Manchester City Council. Alyson also spent three and a half years working for NIACE as a development officer for Black and Minority Ethnic prisoners. She is a member of the Manchester Advisory Committee, involved in the selection and interviewing of potential magistrates. She is also a board member of Lancashire LSC. |

| Critical Panel |
| In 2008 we will be developing a Critical Panel of established artists, creative professionals and academics to provide expert creative and social input into our programme development, practice and evaluation and to advise the Trustees on the company’s creative and participatory practice and recommend improvement. Cartwheel Arts aims to stay at the forefront of participatory arts practice and we are absolutely delighted at the response to our invitations to join our panel. | Members help to set the priorities of the company and are invited to attend functions and events, including the AGM. If you would like to apply for membership you must be over 16. You will need to share our passion for opening particpation equally to all, irrespective of race, age, gender, faith (dis)ability or sexual orientation and for promoting the role the arts can play in social inclusion, regeneration, diversity and community cohesion.
