Working in partnership with Guinness Trust, Cartwheel organised a celebration event at St Margaret’s School and Church in Heywood, Lancashire.
After some 25 years of campaigning by local residents, the school and the church, Heys Lane was finally tarmaced and landscaped, making it at last a safer road for the school and church users.
The event in June 2006 was for all the campaigners, the school children, church users and local residents to come together to celebrate the official opening of the road. The youngest member of the school and the oldest resident of the Lane cut the ceremonial ribbon. Local councillors and MP Jim Dobbin, who had helped with the campaign came along to join the celebrations.
All the children in the school had a fun filled afternoon with drumming workshops by Sambangra, hat and mask making with Jo Gornall and Rachel Vincent and face painting with local students from Hopwood Hall College.
