At Deeplish Community Centre, Cartwheel Arts is working with a South Asian men’s group – Humsafar – to help enhance their wellbeing through creative activities.
Cartwheel Arts has curated a range of creative activities to respond to the group’s diverse interests.
One session met one participant’s ambition to learn to juggle to impress his grandchildren, so we invited Rochdale’s Skylight Arts along to deliver a circus skills’ workshop. Working with artist Meg Beamish, the group painted flowerpots to use indoors or outdoors in the community centre’s garden. The pots have been put to good use as planters for summer vegetables, including spinach and radishes.
In one workshop, the group collaborated with visual artist Razwan Ul-Haq to explore Islamic calligraphy techniques and examine the role of calligraphy in the Islamic faith and spirituality. The group examined calligraphy that expressed gratitude for the planet’s abundance and the various phases of the moon. Embedded within Cartwheel Arts creative wellbeing projects is that groups are supported by a therapeutic specialist. We’re delighted to have worked with Abdur Rehman Hussain on this project.
